Overview

The Senior Director of Safety and Relief Operations is responsible for ensuring all organizational sites’ safety, security, and operational continuity while supporting employees in critical operational needs. This role combines leadership in safety management with hands-on operational support, creating and enforcing safety protocols, managing emergency preparedness, and ensuring the organization is in compliance with State and Federal regulations as it pertains to safety training and disaster relief. Oversight also includes industrial claims mitigation and tracking incident reports around non-clinical patient and staff safety.

This position requires an operationally agile leader who can provide flexible, on-the-ground support during high-need situations, including 24/7 program sites. Success depends on clearly defined expectations and addressing barriers such as scheduling, safety, and compliance at high-need locations.

As the point person for site safety, this individual will lead efforts in emergency preparedness, natural disaster planning, and workplace risk management. They will work collaboratively with Human Resources, Facilities, and Operations teams to ensure compliance with all safety regulations while fostering a supportive and productive work environment. The Senior Director will also be expected to collaborate with external partners, attend City Council meetings, and lead several organization-wide meetings pertaining to staff and patient safety.

This is a full time, exempt, benefit eligible, on-site position in Berkeley, CA.

Benefits

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION AND REQUIRED CREDENTIALS:
    Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, human resources, or related field required; equivalent work experience will be considered.
    Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in safety management, operations, or related leadership role in a multi-site environment.

    EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
    • Proven ability to lead safety management and compliance in a complex organization.
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards and emergency preparedness.
    • Expertise in conflict resolution and de-escalation.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency; familiarity with safety management software preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Certification in safety management (e.g., OSHA 30, CSP) or emergency response.
    • Experience in healthcare, nonprofit, or multi-site organizations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
    • May require evening or weekend work.
    • Environment may include high-stress or emergency conditions.
