    Description

    This position is the result of an innovative relationship between LifeLong Medical Care and the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD). While LifeLong will be the employer of record and provide clinical oversight, the School Nurse will provide services to eligible District students, reporting on a day-to-day basis to the Executive Director of Special Education or designee. The position is on school year full-time schedule.

     

    The credentialed school nurse’s primary function is to address the health conditions of special needs students as they relate to their educational requirements. The school nurse uses the nursing process, clinical expertise and professional judgment to design and implement health services to ensure that students with special needs receive benefit from their educational experience. This is accomplished by working collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators and other members of multi-disciplinary teams, and utilizing linkages to resources within the community.

     

    Responsibilities

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

    (E = Essential Duties)

    Administrative

    • Provide supervision and consultation to staff that provide health services in BUSD. E
    • Oversee contracts for vendors providing health services. E
    • Organize and supervise mandated district screenings. E
    • Coordinate compliance for all state education health mandates. E
    • Provide district wide consultation for all health related issues. E
    • Develop and implement systems for Medi-Cal billing. E
    • Supervise clerk assigned to health services. E

     

    Health Assessments of Students

    • Conduct health and developmental assessments for students identified with special needs. E
    • Determine the appropriate level of care for students with specialized healthcare needs based on assessment and data collected from parents, teachers, other school staff, medical and community agencies. E
    • Write assessment reports. E
    • Interpret assessments and medical information, including physician’s orders to school staff working with student(s). E
    • Maintain up to date vision and hearing information for special education students. E

    Case Management-Health Needs

    • Provide school nursing case management for identified special needs students with healthcare needs. E
    • Develop and monitor individual healthcare plans for students with identified health needs or chronic illness, including emergency care plans when needed.   E
    • Train, monitor and supervise staff providing specialized healthcare procedures. E 
    • Provide direct healthcare services when necessary. E       
    • Communicate effectively with students, families, caregivers, and health care providers (including physicians) regarding student health issues. E
    • Assist parents in connecting with community health resources. E
    • Train and monitor procedures for administering medications to students in schools
    • Participates in IEP (Individual Education Plan (IEP)) meetings. Assist the IEP team in completing present levels for performance section of the IEP for Health Status and assists in developing health related goals as a member of the IEP team. E
    • Provide consultation to 504 teams regarding healthcare accommodations needed for eligible students. E
    • Provide follow-up with parents of children who fail State mandated screenings. E
    • Collaborate with community agencies to provide resources for students and their families. E
    • Maintain and protect confidential student records. E
    • Promote a healthy school environment for emotional and physical safety. E
    • Participate in BUSD Medi-Cal collaborative. E

    Health Education

    • Assist in arranging for and/or providing health related professional development.  E
    • Provide mandated health trainings to staff on an annual basis. E
    • Provide support and education to secretaries regarding school health requirements. E

    Interagency Coordination

    • Work closely with Berkeley Public Health and other agencies regarding identification, prevention and control of communicable diseases, including any necessary student exclusions from school.   E
    • Participate in health related interagency meetings Other Duties as Assigned

     

    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications

    CREDENTIALS AND LICENSES

    • Must hold or be qualified to hold a California School Nurse Credential or qualify to apply for one.
    • Must possess a Bachelor Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, and possess a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California. .
    • Must have a valid California Driver’s License and available personal transportation.
    • Valid audiometry certificate/credential and CPR training certificates are desirable

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Environment:

    • Office and school environment.
    • Subject to driving or walking to off-site locations in performance of duties.
    • Subject to frequent interruptions.
